5. Collins, D.E. -- Correspondence Wednesday, September 02, 1998
There is so much on the ancestors of Martha Bell Woods that it is hard to tell where to begin. A lot has been published on them and my file is thick. The earliest Woods was named John, and he lived in County Meath, Ireland. Which of several Johns, and who his wife was is the subject of> great speculation. His son, Michael Woods, was born in County Meath, Ireland, about 1684, and married Lady Mary Campbell. (there is also a lot of speculation on her ancestry, but none proven.) They immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania about 1724, where their son Archibald (our ancestor) married Isabell Goss (daughter of John Goss, who died there about Dec. 1734.) About 1734, Michael Woods moved his rather large family south through the> Shenandoah Valley. When they reached a point adjacent to the present> Charlottesville, Virginia, he took his family across the Blue Ridge Mountains, being the first white persons to cross the mountains and settle in present day Albemarle County, Virginia. The gap they crossed became known as Michael Woods Gap (and was later changed to Jarman Gap). They purchased a good bit of land at the base of the gap. This is where Michael live. Archibald lived in the gap on top of the mountains. Michael Woods died there in 1762. Archibald and Isabella Woods moved> further South to the banks of the Savannah River in Abbeville District, South Carolina, arriving there on Jan. 3, 1765. He died there in 1768. Isabella died there on Nov. 2, 1766. They had a son William Woods (our ancestor) who was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, and died in Feb. 1804 in Abbeville District, SC. He married Susannah Catherine Mecklin.
6. 1860 Houston County, Georgia Census, 9th District, Page 10, Pheraby, age 12, female.
7. Letter from D.E. Collins, dated 8/31/1998, I am descended from Jacob and Martha Bell Hampton's daughter Pheribee Ann Sophronia Hampton, who married Isaiah Burkett Barrett in Perry, Georgia in about 1868. They had a daughter, Margaret Gertrude Barrett, who married George Thomas Collins, my grandfather. Their first child was my father, Louis Richard Collins, who was born in Fort Valley.
